In 1923, nineteen-year-old Robert Hawkins leaves his college life and boards a train to Saranac Lake, New York. Banished for contracting tuberculosis, he finds himself in a

place that combines the stillness of the North Woods “rest cure” with the tension and energy of a collection of young people—half of whom will not go home. In this place where very little seems to happen, everything happens.

Every moment matters and reveals the souls of those who know they will not grow old. Twenty-seven years later, in 1950, Detective Hawkins reads a newspaper account of several unexplained deaths linked to the sanatorium he left behind and vowed to forget. The story awakens memories, and a sense of duty that he cannot escape. 

He returns to Saranac Lake, where he faces much more than a murder mystery.
