Class in Session: Retired Educator Debuts Collection of Heartwarming School Stories
TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN—Every teacher has their own library of student stories. The catch? Most forget to write them down. However, Eric Hall did just the opposite. His upcoming autobiography, Controlled Chaos: Lessons They Didn’t Teach You in Teacher School is a collection that chronicles his twenty-seven years spent in classrooms.

After starting off sharing stories on his Facebook page, One Hall of a Story, the author was encouraged to begin taking pen to paper. One year ago, he began what would become Controlled Chaos. Despite being new to long-form storytelling, Hall has previously published articles for educational magazines nationwide, and always brought his storytelling talent to class with him.
“I am a storyteller by nature and often told my students stories as part of the lesson. I feel like students can relate to lessons when there is a memorable story behind them,” Hall explained.
Still, the stories go deeper than just the silly situations and standard-test-taking turmoil.
“Right now, public education is being scrutinized. This book offers a counter to any argument about the role a teacher plays in a student's life,” Hall remarked. “I hope readers finish this book feeling inspired and refreshed, knowing that there are teachers out there putting children first.”
Filled with laughs featuring fifth graders, April Fools’ pranks, and thoughtfully designed approaches to teamwork, persistence, kindness, and public presentations, there is no doubt that this collection will leave you with cheeks aching from a grin.

“With wit, wisdom, and warmth, these stories capture the everyday antics of the classroom while weaving in timeless teaching strategies. The essential questions asked linger long after the page is turned. In just five minutes, you’ll find yourself laughing, reflecting, and inspired by the lessons of a teacher whose decades in the classroom left a lasting mark on countless lives. A perfect companion for educators seeking both joy and insight in their day.”
—Dr. Rosemary T. Wong, co-author, The First Days of School, and CEO, Harry K. Wong Publications, Inc.
“Controlled Chaos is the kind of book every educator should keep within arm’s reach; a reminder of why we do this work and of the magic that lives in every classroom. As I moved through each chapter, I found myself laughing, nodding, and reflecting deeply on my own journey as an educator. Eric Hall has an extraordinary gift for capturing the heart of teaching: the unpredictability, the creativity, the tenderness, and the life-changing moments that happen when we lean into our calling with courage and joy.
Eric Hall not only teaches lessons, he lives them. His creativity, compassion, and belief in children radiate through every page. This book left me inspired, affirmed, and truly grateful for this window into his world. I wholeheartedly recommend Controlled Chaos to educators, families, aspiring teachers, and anyone who wants to understand the profound, joyful, transformative impact of teaching done well.”
—Joyce Abbott, veteran educator and namesake of the Emmy-award-winning Abbott Elementary
