This coming-of-age tale follows the unlikely bond between a wolf named Fortune and a young girl, Marie, whose parents come from two distinct cultures: the Ojibwe Nation and French colonial heritage. Against the backdrop of early northern Michigan history, the story explores Marie's journey as she confronts stereotypes and discovers the power of empathy and courage with the support of her parents and her best friend, Fortune. 

 Set in the forests along the shores of Lake Michigan, Wolf's Mitten encourages young readers to appreciate the enduring bonds that connect people, animals, and the world of community. The natural affinity that develops between Marie and Fortune provides the steady foundation she needs to navigate her world. Learning of Marie's unique birthmark and the challenges it presents, readers are invited to reflect on what it means to be different—and to discover the value of kindness, acceptance, and belonging. 

 Drawing on authentic experience, Moore states, “As a middle school teacher, I have witnessed students at their best, being inclusive and kind. Unfortunately, part of the adolescent journey is also navigating the times when peers ostracize and exclude.” The author has a deep passion for social justice and fostering an appreciation for diverse cultures. The Author

Brewster Moore attended the University of Michigan, earning the freshman literature award and graduating with a bachelor’s degree in English and psychology. Passionate about equity and justice, Brewster pursued higher education, attending Cornell Law School where he earned his juris doctor degree. Upon graduation, he spent the first part of his professional career working as an assistant prosecuting attorney, specializing in the prosecution of domestic violence in both Wayne and Oakland counties in Michigan.
