Compassion and Chemistry at the Cannabis Counter
Author’s Budtender Blueprint Compels Her Compassionate Approach to Cannabis Education and Dedication to Safety, Accessibility, and Enjoyment
Traverse City, MI—From high schoolers embarking on a crime spree in Reefer Madness (1936) to buddy-tripping adventures in Cheech & Chong’s Up in Smoke (1978), pop culture has always reflected society’s changing view of cannabis. And while more recent offerings portray the business aspect of cannabis, there’s been little attention paid to what author Angie Roullier refers to as “the beauty of the cannabis culture”—a topic she fully explores in Budtender’s Blueprint, Compassion and Chemistry at the Cannabis Counter (Mission Point Press), February 19, 2026.

Drawing on fifteen years of industry experience, Roullier wrote Budtender’s Blueprint for cannabis retail professionals seeking to elevate their craft as they build solid foundations for customer care and support based on science and compassion. Roullier’s journey in the industry began after discovering cannabis as a treatment for her Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, which led to work as a budtender, shop manager, team lead, cannabis educator, and author. In addition, she’s spoken with city councils, law enforcement, assisted living facilities, and veterans to share science-based knowledge.
Education & Experience
Reflecting on her experience, Roullier said, “Unfortunately, the primary role as a budtender has deteriorated over the years. What was once a position that educated the consumer to aid them in making tailored decisions with no higher motivation than to help a human in need, has evolved into how much money the budtender can get the consumer to spend.” Dispensary owners’ focus on profit and encouraging sales of their highest-paid sponsor’s product is, “quite frankly not only hurting the consumer but also killing our culture one sale at a time.”
The mission of Budtender’s Blueprint is to educate, providing cited research on the plant’s chemicals, the different methods of intake, how to successfully interact with consumers, and how to handle policy situations.
A New Level of Responsibility
Citing the critical nature of customer support to provide the highest level of care, Roullier shared a personal experience from her time as a budtender on her blog. The wife of one of her customers, Stu, was suffering with dementia and was in the throes of the sleeplessness and violence stage. Roullier counseled Stu through numerous visits as he sought advice on different products that could provide relief. It took time, but positive results soon enabled Stu’s wife to join him on his visits to the dispensary where Roullier delivered new purchases to their car in the parking lot.
“The responsibility falls to us not only to keep learning as cannabis research evolves but also to apply that knowledge in a compassionate manner. The beauty of the cannabis culture is ours to lose. It’s my hope that after reading Budtender’s Blueprint, you’ll pick up the fight to keep it alive,” Roullier shared.

The Author
Angie Roullier discovered cannabis as a treatment for her Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease over fifteen years ago, improving her quality of life and sparking a passion for understanding its effects. She has worked as a budtender, shop manager, and team lead, helping open and run the first dispensary in one of the country’s toughest counties. Now a cannabis educator and author of Pot for the People, Roullier speaks with city councils, law enforcement, assisted living facilities, and veterans to share science-based knowledge about cannabis, including dosages, prescription interactions, and terpene profiles. She has seen cannabis help many—but not everyone—and emphasizes that it is a tool, not a cure-all.
